Of course there are rules. Everyone has them. You'll find that we have fewer rules than most groups, but our standards are a lot higher. I'll briefly go through the rules we have here. If it's not on the list, then it's okay. If you're still not sure about it, ask an admin. One of us is bound to be around somewhere.
1. Rating
We realize there's no real way of making sure how old people are when they join. So please keep your writing relatively clean. No sex or profanity, and if you have violence, nothing horribly graphic. (And by graphic, I don't necessarily mean what the scene is depicting. It's all in how you describe it.)
2. Posting Minimum
There is only a minimum for your first post. At least 300 words for your opening post in a thread. After that, use your best judgement. Naturally if two characters are having a conversation, the players aren't expected to fill in 200 words. We'd rather your post be well written, rather than filled with fluff to take up space. At TSR it's about quality, not quantity. Although having a good balance of both couldn't hurt.
3. Double Posting
Go for it! TSR has no money system set up, so you don't get anything except respect for having a lot of posts. The only real guideline for this is, if you're playing with someone else, as a courtesy, don't double post before it's their turn. Allowing double posting is really just a way to give people more freedom, especially where roleplaying two or more of your own characters is concerned.
4. Continuity
They say that the devil is in the details, and with a setting like this one, there are a lot of details. The writing staff will continue to keep up on new developements and creations by posting them on the website. It is up to you as a writer to pay attention to these details when writing. If someone has already stated how something looks, where a city is, or the name of a river, and this information has been posted on the website, then it's set in stone, and your writing must reflect this. On the other hand, if in the course of a post you'd like to name, create, or describe a city or piece of terrain, feel free to do so. So long as it hasn't been established by anyone else and your description doesn't contradict something already on the website, it's basically a first come first serve basis. Just make sure you send the description to the admin's so that they may review and add it to the website.
5. Fighting
As it says in the introduction, this forum has no dice, no attributes, no spells or skills that are assigned to characters. "So how do we decide who wins?" you ask? This must be decided between the players themselves. If you have a good reason within the storyline for your character to fight another character, get together with that player and talk it over. Using the plot as a guideline, it should be easy enough to decide who should win. If it isn't, blow the whistle for an admin, who will review the story and make an unbiased decision on the matter. (Note: Please try talking it out first. We'd rather the players make the decision amongst themselves, without bringing in a third party.) It is our hope that this will prevent frivolous fighting that has nothing to do with the plot. Once you know who's going to win, play the fight out to the best of your abilities. Death is not an option unless the dying character's player agrees.
6. Activity/Absenses
How strict we are on this rule depends on how important your character is to major plotlines. We reserve the right to manipulate your characters storyline after three weeks of unexplained absences. If there are extenuating circumstances, some of the changes may be reversed.
7. Multiple Characters
Feel free to have as many characters as you think you can keep active. We only ask that you create a new user name for each character. Writing with yourself is also allowed, so long as you don't ignore a valid attempt by another player to join your thread. (If your thread is marked CLOSED, you won't be expected to respond to that person.)
8. Regarding the Deep
Any character traveling in the deep, whether or not they're a Shaper, may at any time be manipulated by the writing staff. Walking in the deep is an "enter at own risk" situation. However, our Authors are carefully selected, and will be watched on these occasions for abuse. Permanant changes to the character or death will not take place without the player's permission. If any player feels that an Author has abused their power, please contact myself or one of the other admins.
9. Chat Logs
If you prefer to roleplay using instant messengers, chat logs are allowed, so long as they're spell checked and properly edited. Remove screen names, combine posts that may have been cut down because of text limits, and break long posts into paragraphs. Put the names of all contributing writers and the characters they're playing in a note at the top of the post.
